Jason Veltri: Advocate, Political Organizer, and Community Leader
Jason Veltri, a 41-year-old political organizer from Thunder Bay, has dedicated his life to advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion. With an extensive background in political organizing and community service, Veltri is a notable figure in the region’s advocacy landscape.
In 2021, Veltri founded the Rainbow Collective of Thunder Bay, a pivotal organization supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. His commitment to these communities extends to his roles on several boards, including Thunder Bay Counselling, the City of Thunder Bay's Clean, Green, and Beautiful Committee, and the Community Safety and Wellbeing Advisory Committee, where he was appointed by the Thunder Bay Police Services Board in 2023.
Veltri’s leadership was prominently displayed during his tenure as Chair of the City’s Anti-Racism and Equity Advisory Committee for five years and as Chair of the Thunder Pride Association from 2018 to 2020.
His significant contributions include the installation of the Rainbow and Transgender Crosswalks, the flying of Pride flags at all Catholic and public schools in Thunder Bay, and overseeing the Thunder Bay Pride Festival, transforming it into a must-attend, family-friendly event.
His dedication and impact were recognized when he won the 2020 SHIFT: Thunder Bay's Young Professionals Network SHIFT Disturber Award, honoring his tireless efforts to foster a community that values diversity and inclusion.
Veltri’s deep political organizing experience began at a remarkably young age. Even before he was eligible to vote, he immersed himself in political campaigns and movements starting at 17. Over the years, he has worked on campaigns for prominent figures such as Hon. Michael Gravelle, Hon. Patty Hajdu, Dr. Marcus Powlowski, Hon. Bill Mauro, and many others. His extensive experience and unwavering commitment were further demonstrated in 2022 when he ran for Thunder Bay City Council, finishing a close second place, just 116 votes behind the winner.
This experience has given him a profound understanding of what it takes to plan and run for office, solidifying his role as a vital player in Thunder Bay’s political landscape.
